Children’s Parliament camp was held in two batches, one on January 18th & 19th, 2025 and the second batch on 8th & 9th of February,2025 as a child-led initiative to encourage young minds to engage in decision-making, leadership, and community development. Children actively participated in a simulated parliamentary session, taking on roles such as Ministers and Members, discussing issues that affect their lives, and proposing practical solutions.
Objectives of the Camp:
Formation & Activities:
A group of 63 children from nine villages participated in the camp. They were divided into groups and assigned topics such as education, sanitation, child rights, and health to discuss. Through these discussions, they proposed solutions and suggestions to collaborate with the relevant authorities.
This camp had a profound impact on the participating children, helping them build confidence, improve their public speaking skills, and develop strong leadership qualities. By equipping them with these essential skills, the program empowered them to take initiative and become proactive change-makers within their communities. The children who underwent this training will now return to their respective villages, where they will share their knowledge and mentor other children. Through this process, they will work towards establishing Children’s Parliaments in their communities, creating a platform for young voices to be heard and fostering a culture of participation, leadership, and advocacy among their peers.
The training sessions were conducted by experienced resource persons from the Sunitha Solomon Foundation, Bangalore, who provided valuable guidance and expertise, ensuring that the children received a comprehensive learning experience.
Impact and Outcome:
By the end of the camp, participants left with a greater understanding of how governmental systems work, as well as the practical skills to take action in their communities. They gained confidence in their ability to voice their opinions and contribute meaningfully to discussions that shape the world around them. In addition, the camp fostered a sense of solidarity among the children, as they learned how to collaborate and support each other in their efforts to create a better future.
This child-led initiative not only provided an educational experience but also underscored the importance of youth empowerment and engagement in democracy. It demonstrated that when children are given the opportunity to lead, they can be powerful agents of change, shaping the policies and solutions that will define their generation.
